What exactly is a belief?

Well, it’s a feeling of certainty about what something means.

The challenge is that most of our beliefs are generalized ideas about our past and based on our own interpretation of what causes pain or pleasure.

How Ideas Turn Into Beliefs

To believe something, you have references to support the idea—specific experiences that back up the belief.  

Imagine a tabletop, for instance.

Without legs, it could never stand by itself. 

Yet – with strong, sturdy legs – it can.

Belief is like that tabletop and your thoughts and experiences, the legs. Your thoughts and experiences are what make you certain that your beliefs are true.

Let´s say you believe you are extremely ambitious.  If that´s the case, chances are you have plenty of references to support that idea. Perhaps you are good at pursuing your goals, you don´t let anything hold you back and people always tell you how much they admire your focus and motivation.

I´m sure, if you stop to think about it, you can find all kinds of experiences in your past to back up that belief.

The key is to be consciously aware of the beliefs you are creating.

And if they don´t empower you, take steps to change them.
