How To Create a Strong Self-Image That Paves Your Path to Success

A strong self-image

How do you see yourself?

Everything comes down to self-image. A strong self-image is the foundation for confidence, action, and persistence. If you don’t think much of the person you are, these qualities are going to be in short supply.

I know how hard it can be to examine, challenge, and change the beliefs you have about yourself.

Still, the success you experience in life depends on it.

Where do you start?

Begin by figuring out what´s getting in your way…

What beliefs and recurring thoughts do you have that are limiting you or casting a shadow on how you see yourself?

Make a list of all your limiting and negative beliefs, and then prioritize that list. Work with the 10 most damaging.

  • I’ll never be good with money.
  • I’m not good at making friends.
  • People don’t like me.
  • I just can’t lose weight.
  • I don’t have any self-control.
  • I’m horrible at math and science.
  • I’m stuck in this career for the rest of my life.
  • It’s too late to change my life.

Attack Each Belief Individually

Don´t just sit and allow those negative thoughts to spin around inside your head! Now is the time to use everything at your disposal to turn them around and transform them completely.

Imagine you have the negative belief, “I’ll never be good with money.”

  • The statement is ridiculous. Anyone can be good with money if they know the “rules” of personal finance. You’ve also mastered plenty of other things you weren’t naturally good at, like riding a bike, speaking English, walking, making coffee, and playing tennis. Most of those things are more challenging than handling money well.

  • Look for examples in your life where the opposite was true…perhaps you remember being a diligent saver as a child. Or what about that time you took personal finance class in high school? And there was that time you earned and saved the money you needed take a trip to Europe after your sophomore year of college…

Hone Your Skills & Make A Plan

Now think about what it is you need to learn to turn things around. Once you know that you can lay out a plan to do it.

Maybe your friend-making skills are a little rusty. So you buy a book on enhancing your social life, join a wine-tasting club, and put your newfound skills to work. It won’t take long to see real improvement in your results and your self-image.

Put Together A List Of Your Accomplishments

You’ve already accomplished a lot – speaking, graduating from school, getting your first apartment, securing your first job, hitting a homerun in little league, learning to drive. List them all. Keep the list handy and review it daily.

Listen Carefully To What You Are Saying To Yourself

The negative things you´ve been saying to yourself are nonsense. Still, when we hear things often enough, we eventually believe them. This goes for self-talk as well.

Focus on catching yourself when the negative voice inside your head gets going and shift to more positive and supportive thoughts.

  • “I can’t do this” becomes “I know I’ll find a way.”
  • “I’m too short” becomes “I’ve been tall enough so far for everything that matters. My height is irrelevant.”

Choose Who You Want To Be With

And spend time with people who make you feel good about yourself. At the same time, avoid those who make you feel bad about yourself. There are people in your life that make you feel like an attractive, fascinating genius, and there are those that manage to do the exact opposite. It’s obvious which group will enhance your self-image.

  • Create a list of people to spend more time with and a list of people to avoid.

Changing the way you see yourself won´t happen overnight. While the path is clear, the process takes focus and consistent action. It also takes courage, experimentation, and patience. Be fair with yourself. It’s human nature to emphasize the negative and downplay the positive. Following the tips I´ve shared with you here will help you develop a more realistic opinion of the unique person you are. If you´re serious about achieving greater success in your life, improving the way you see yourself is where you need to start.
